Established in April 2001, EEEGR (the East of England Energy Group) is a business led, business driven regional energy industry association. It is a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee. Its membership comprises commercial businesses and organisations, public sector agencies, not-for-profit bodies and academic institutions. EEEGR is the single focal point representing the energy industry and striving to ensure that all these regional assets combine to form a world-class industry capable of competing in a global energy market.

Energy Industry - Definition

For EEEGR to be effective it is necessary to establish an understanding of how the energy industry is defined. In the simplest of terms, the starting point is one of supply and demand;

• Supply - Business and income generated by finding, exploiting and developing the means of production of energy, its conversion to generate electricity, heat and fuel and its transmission to point of use. This is the supply chain of the energy industry.
• Demand - The way in which energy is used to achieve its final objective (i.e. to power, heat and/or drive) and captures the ethos of good resource management and thus improves efficiency, productivity and competitiveness. This should be undertaken as best practice by all business and is a key tenant of the Energy White Paper, which promotes the wise use of energy.

The East of England energy industry has to meet new challenges and position itself to seize fresh opportunities if it is to capitalise on a sustainable future based on secure and clean energy supplies, a very different story from some 40 years ago when the oil industry was developed and gas was first brought ashore in the region.

The current business plan focuses on the activities of EEEGR for the next three years to March 2010, and act as a high-level document to inform and engage all stakeholders in the future role of EEEGR. It will inform decisions on the underlying funding and structure necessary for funding partners to deliver strategic and economic value through a sustainable energy industry in the East of England region. The document aims to baseline the past, build on achievements and be realistic about what can be delivered in the future.
