Mapping - is needed to identify all engineering and manufacturing businesses, where these businesses are located particularly so that clusters can be identified. Furthermore, both the skill levels of the workforce and innovation/growth performance around these businesses / clusters needs to be understood so that focus is given to meeting skill demands of engineering and manufacturing businesses.
HEC is currently undergoing a mapping exercise, named mapergy, showing the distribution of engineering businesses across the Eastern Region. This map can be found at http://www.hethelcentre.com/mapping/index.php
Current & Future Clusters - Within the engineering and manufacturing sector there are ‘clusters' that are not necessarily geographically based. By focusing on clusters, efforts can be made to pull together, relevant people and businesses and strategies and actions that are focused and therefore more likely to be effective and yield results. Furthermore, with the current clusters identified discussion can be had around ‘future technologies' ie what will the future clusters be and how then can we prepare for them and their needs.
